Switch from Shopify

Stores moving from Shopify to Rundoo are not abandoning Shopify, they are putting it back in the role it does best. Shopify keeps running their online storefront. Rundoo takes over the counter, the back office, and the parts of supply retail that Shopify was never designed to handle. Here is what tends to change in the first few weeks.

Decimal quantities, finally. Lumber by the foot, paint by the gallon, feed by the pound, hardware by the each. Shopify's product model is built around whole-unit ecommerce SKUs, so supply stores end up using workarounds like "1 unit equals 12 inches" and hoping no one rings it up wrong. Rundoo is built around fractional units from the start, so 14.7 linear feet of decking is one scan, one line item, one price.

Native charge accounts and contractor pricing. Shopify POS does not natively model charge accounts the way supply stores actually use them: statements, aging, account holds, customer payments at the counter. B2B-style features exist on Shopify Plus, but Plus pricing is rarely a fit for a single-location indie. Most supply stores on Shopify run a second legacy system for charge customers and reconcile by hand. One system instead of two. Philip Fondale at Missouri River Lumber in Fort Benton, Montana, was running Shopify for walk-ins and a separate legacy system for his contractors before he moved to Rundoo. A counter workflow built for the way supply stores ring. Shopify POS is a polished retail checkout, and works well for stores that ring whole units at a flat price. Supply store counters work differently: quick-add for walk-ins, mid-sale charge-account lookups, contractor pricing on the fly, split tenders, returns against historic invoices, often all in the same transaction.
